A true-life hiring yarn: I was working with a guy once who truly reached the acme of the cocky cover letter genre. At the end of his (extremely verbose) cover letter, he pompously wrapped it up with an admonition not to waste his time by calling unless I could guarantee getting him an interview. No problem, buddy! As he kept sending in applications every 6 weeks or so I can only imagine that no one felt up to the challenge.
Kidding aside, though, great advice- its easy to get so caught up in the job hunt you miss the forest for the trees and fail to realize that what looks like enterprise and engagement can look an awful lot like fanaticism from the other side of the desk.

Very correct approach to taking an interview. The last thing any company needs is bookish kind of employees who may have excelled at theory but may fail miserably where practical application is concerned.

How on earth were some of these products rejected? They are great! If the Death Star Dart board and bbq were still available I would presently be superlasering pork ribs while launching dart missiles straight into the hypermatter reactor.
