It seems as though automated testing or scripting experience is becoming mandatory for more and more software testing jobs in Dublin, particularly permanent jobs/better paying jobs/better employer jobs. It seems as though elsewhere a division has developed between manual and automated testers, but in Ireland it seems to be a case of automated testing experience becoming a prerequisite for most QA/ software testing roles.
The implications of this are interesting as many (if not most) of the QA people we’ve seen have a manual testing background. This seems to have become a pretty high-value skill in Dublin at the moment.
“Cloud computing” seems to be that new phrase you suddenly start hearing everywhere. First, we heard Ray Ozzie talk about it as part of Microsoft’s new business model in the Mix08 keynote address. Now we’re hearing about the new cloud computing center IBM will be opening in Ireland (via Silicon Republic and IBM).
To be honest, at first I was kind of confused as to exactly what cloud computing was all about, but luckily HowStuffWorks shed some light on that (as an aside, the power requirements of the main Google facility are pretty awesome in the Biblical sense).
Old news by now, but everyone’s buzzing about the Google/ DoubleClick deal. Further information/discussion here at Slashdot and here at Silicon Republic. Of course it’s likely there will be job cutbacks, but it’s hard to say what the impact will end up being here in Ireland- both DoubleClick and Google have offices in Dublin (Clontarf and Grand Canal Dock, respectively) handling ad sales.
